El Torolío

Social Media

From meme to Movement

Challenge

In Dominican baseball, strategies can change overnight, and content must adapt quickly to keep fans engaged. During the 2018–2019 semifinals, the Toros del Este needed something fresh to spark both players and fans at a decisive moment in the season.

Solution

On January 8, 2019, inspired by the famous 1993 “Got Milk?” campaign, we created a digital mock-up of a t-shirt reading “Got Torolio?” and posted it on social media.

What began as a playful idea immediately caught the players’ attention — they asked the marketing team to make the shirts a reality.

  • Debut: El Torolio was first seen during batting practice.

  • Identity: What started as a meme became part of the team’s culture.

  • Impact: Players embraced it, their confidence grew, and fans made it their own, driving high demand for official merchandise.

In 2019–2020, we elevated the concept into a full campaign. Working with graphic designer Johan Abreu, we filled the team’s signature stadium billboard with regional phrases and bold at the center: “Los Dueños del Torolio.”
The phrase cemented itself as a cultural marker and a rallying cry for the season.

Results
  • Cultural Reach
    • El Torolio became a top-of-mind phrase not only among Toros del Este fans, but also for rivals and neutrals.
    • Boosted player morale and fan confidence during decisive games.
    • Extended beyond the Dominican Republic, becoming a rallying chant during the 2020 Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico.
    • Legendary broadcasters like Mendy López, Kevin Cabral, Santana Martínez, and Luichy Sánchez referenced it live, cementing its place in Caribbean baseball culture.

  • Jerseys sold out in record time.

  • The Torolio product line drove an additional 17% increase in merchandise sales.

Revenue Impact
  • 2022–23 season: US $17,800 in Torolio-branded merchandise and digital sales.

  • 2023–24 season: US $26,875 — highest brand exposure and sales to date.

Highlights
  • From playful slogan to symbol of identity for the Toros.

  • #Torolio became a staple of the team’s digital and fan culture.

  • A cultural and commercial win: from memes to merchandise and uniforms.

  • Proof that bold, innovative strategies can turn fan culture into a brand asset.

Conclusion

El Torolio went from a digital joke to a cultural and commercial phenomenon, energizing players, captivating fans, and driving revenue through merchandise and uniforms.
It became a storytelling and branding milestone in Dominican baseball history — and a masterclass in how to transform a fan-driven trend into long-term brand growth.

🔥 Now it’s a powerhouse case study: cultural impact + audience growth + merchandise sales + international recognition.
